Infertility
Recent meta-analyses suggest that acupuncture (AC) given with embryo transfer improves rates of pregnancy among women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) (for every ten women treated with acupuncture and IVF, one additional pregnancy may be achieved). Notably, AC on the day of peri- embryo transfer (ET) appears to significantly improve the reproductive outcome of IVF/ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection). In addition, the inclusion of acupuncture in assisted fertility protocols has marginal incremental cost (about 5%) compared to the benefits of interest. These benefits range from increased success rates to added approaches to unexplained infertility, decreased patient's emotional distress, and increased personalization of the protocol.
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is an increasingly seen syndrome which affects 3-5% of the total population; 3.4% of all women and 0.5% of men and has a significant familial, societal and financial cost. While research continues to refine biochemical understandings of FMS, the optimal management of fibromyalgia syndrome remains unclear, comprehensive evidence-based guidelines have not been reported and there are still no medications approved by the FDA for treating FMS. However emerging research trends begin to analyze FMS in terms of subgroups and suggest that subgroup approaches could improve therapeutic possibilities.
This is what our research and acupuncture clinical work shows. Using our Systems Energetics bio-psychosocial model and its distinction of subgroups offer a significant contribution in (1) providing a comprehensive model and (2) providing more differentiated and tailored treatment strategies. Based on the positive clinical response, we can only encourage people suffering from FMS to explore this therapeutic avenue.
Pain management & Orthopedic Care
AC in pain management adds additional benefits to the conventional systems already in place as follows. (1) Harmonization of physiological functions and stress management. (2) AC decreases pain, including in peri operative care, and provides an improvement in the return to normal self-caring. (3) AC may have a role in the reduction or alleviation of postoperative complications. (4) AC provides positive effect on wound healing, such as increase of blood supply in the stimulated areas, influence on the rate of wound healing and scar strength, wound contraction, better tensile properties, reduction of wound edema, and healing in a organized manner.
